Jacob Hopping enlisted for a 3-year service on September 15, 1861 and served as a Corporal in Company K, 7th New Jersey Infantry. He received a mortal wound to his left thigh during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. He lingered several days before succumbing to his wounds on July 16th, 1863.
